Rooms are chosen via the aptly named housing lottery. Selection of a room is based on one's lottery pick. The upperclassmen housing lottery is held in the spring. Each class has a separate lottery, starting with the incoming senior class. The freshmen housing lottery is held during orientation in the fall. If you are considering a double or triple for your freshmen year, you will need to find a prospective roommate during your week of orientation before you move into your permanent rooming assignment.

Next House offers singles, doubles, and triples to all its residents. On average, singles are about 125 square feet, and doubles are about twice this size. The largest rooms in Next House are the solar singles and doubles, named for their floor-to-ceiling windows and corner locations. Most freshmen will live in doubles, although there are usually a few singles open in the fall. Because there is crowding in most of MIT's undergraduate housing, some of the larger doubles will be turned into triples in the fall. Triples are usually the L-shaped large doubles.




Each resident will be provided a bed, desk, bookcase, dresser, trash can, telephone, Ethernet connection, cable connection, and closet space in their room. All other furniture and accessories must be purchased separately.

While rooms vary in shape in size, all of the rooms in Next House are large compared to other undergraduate dorms. Rooms on the river-side of the dorm will have views of the Charles River. Rooms on the opposite side have a view of the athletic fields and Simmons Hall.

About seven to ten people will share a bathroom. Each bathroom has two shower rooms and two toilet rooms with separate locking doors for added privacy. Residents can store their bathroom items (ie. shower caddy, toothbrush, contact lens stuff) in cubby holes in each bathroom.

Each floor has a janitor who cleans the bathrooms and lounges, vacuums the hallways, and empties the trash on weekdays. Residents are responsible for cleaning their own rooms. Each janitor has a closet, which is located across from the number four bathroom on the east side, just off of the elevator lobby.
