Next has fantastic facilities—in our opinion, the best on campus. We have a phenomenal dining hall, a courtyard, a music room, exercise and weight rooms, and more! They’re constantly being updated and added to in order to keep Next looking and feeling great. And did we mention that we have an awesome checkout system with a ton of movies and equipment that you can borrow? For a full list of the fabulous features of Next House, refer below:
Right as you walk in to Next House and move past our lovely front desk, you can’t miss our Tastefully Furnished Lounge, or TFL for short. The TFL is our largest gathering space, and is partitioned into two sections, the main area and the TV area. Many of house-wide study breaks take place in the main area, and countless viewing parties and house meetings have been held in the TV Area. One of our signature student group performances, Next Act, happens entirely in the TFL! When not being used by the whole house, the TFL is a great space to relax with friends or get work done.
Similar to our TFL, the courtyard is huge gathering space for Nexties, but this one is outside. Fun in both the hot weather (with activities such as barbecues and water balloon fights) and the cold weather (snowball fights and snowmen galore), the courtyard is great for outdoor activities with fellow Nexties. And again, much like the TFL, the courtyard is a nice study space when the weather is agreeable. Our courtyard has 2 grills, many picnic tables, and a tree swing.
We could write out countless testimonials in favor of the food at Next Dining, but this is one of those things you’ll just have to taste to believe. Featuring the best food and friendliest chefs on campus, our dining hall is one of the most attractive features of Next. There’s also seating galore, with other residents always ready to welcome another individual. When food is not being served, the dining hall sees many other uses, such as hosting study breaks, offering groups space to work, and yet another quiet study space. Get a peek at the menu here!
For those of you that would like to express your own creative cooking talents (or work on developing them!), Next offers a large communal kitchen space, in our grand Country Kitchen. The Country Kitchen is almost always open and ready for any sort of cooking adventures you may yearn for. The key features of our Country Kitchen include: 4 ovens, 6 fridges, a large amount of tables and other prep space, countless cabinets, and an ice maker. You can store your cooking supplies in the fridges and cabinets (if you apply for one), or use some of our communal cooking supplies. The country kitchen is yet another popular spot for study breaks, and often hosts one of our student groups, Next Bake.
Want to lift some heavy weights or just get some casual exercise in without heading all the way to main campus? Look no further than our local weight room! Located very close to the front entrance, the weight room has a solid variety of strength machines and free weights, as well as a bumping sound system for you to get in the zone while working out.
Not the weight-lifting type? That’s okay too! At Next, we also have a fully furnished cardio room. Located a little bit beyond the front entrance and close to the elevators, the cardio room offers everything you need to get you heart rate up. The cardio room has a number of treadmills and other cardio equipment. You can bring your own music to jam to, bring a laptop to watch some lectures on while jogging, or hook up to the TV inside to watch on a big screen. The cardio room also has frosted glass windows to offer privacy.
Situated right next to our cardio room is the music room, with all the space and utilities you need to develop your musical skills. Feel free to use it solo or with a group, and express yourself without being concerned about waking the neighbors. Our music room has an upright piano, a drum set, and music stands aplenty.
Moving on to our more formal amenities, Next House has a luxurious conference room. The conference room is extremely useful for any sorts of group gatherings. Whether that be a board game session, group project, or event planning meeting, consider using the conference room! The conference room is located in the basement, is air-conditioned, and houses a large table and flat screen television mounted on the wall.
Similar to the conference room, part of our dining hall is designated as the Private Dining Room. Separated from the rest of the dining hall by a glass-windowed wall, the PDR can be used for meetings both on and off dining hours. The PDR features a table even larger than the one in the conference room. It’s also got a projector system, whiteboard, and its own sound system.
Need some more technology in your life? Check out Next’s own Athena Cluster. Maintained by both IS&T as well as Next House, the Athena Cluster is home to all your computing needs. It has multiple computers hooked up to MIT’s Athena system, plenty of desk space, a printer we kindly refer to as Tree-Eater, and a copier/scanner we know as Paperjam (name not indicative of printing performance). The Athena Cluster is located to your immediate right as you walk into Next House.
For all your laundry needs, Next House has a convenient laundry room! The laundry room has an abundant number of washing and drying machines, which you can pay for using TechCash associated to your kerberos, or with good ol’ fashioned quarters. There’s a number of laundry bins with community-sourced names that inspire quite the conversation. We encourage cleanliness in the laundry room, and if you contribute by reporting broken machines, they get fixed within an instant. The laundry room is located to the immediate left of the stairs down in the basement. Find out about current laundry room usage here!
Next House may the furthest dorm from campus, but we feature plenty of bike storage to compensate for that fact! If you own a bike, you’ve got many options as to where you can store your bike. You’ll first notice the bike racks outside; following that is the bike room located right off the lobby of Next House, with capacity for around 40 bikes; and after that we’ve got bike lounges on every wing, which can hold around 10-20 bikes.
Have some free time to kill? Head on down to Next House Basement which features a Game Area with a pool table, foosball table, and ping pong table. All necessary supplies are provided, so bring your friends and get some sweet skills. This basement is also home to the structure we call Next Haunt during the month of October. Whatever the occasion may be, the basement is always a lively place.
Nexties have the ability to reserve a large majority of the above spaces through NextRes! As long as no one else is using the space, you can place a reservation to use a space for a personal or group activity. Check it out here!
